Yes. You're correct. It doesn't need any external clock source unless you would like to use a crystal to trim its internal IMO.

I had not connected the VDDA pin with the VDDD pin. I don't know why that should matter but the bottom line is that it does.
Now the programmer detects the chips. Thankfully I didn't throw them away. Let's see if they do what I want them to do.
VDDA and VDDD, see the description in AN57821.
For proper operation of PSoC4, VDDA must be the highest voltage present on the device. All other supply pins must be less than or equal to VDDA.
