It would be sensible to charge a battery when surplus solar energy is available and use this stored energy later in absence of solar energy especially at night. My concern is if it is possible to connect rechargable lithium ion battery instead of supercapacitor for surplus energy storage. Please suggest if there could be any issues other than charging and discharging rates.

Hi
Some of customers use the rechargeable battery instead of super capacitor. There are some note as shown below.
1. Set VOUTH and VOUTL voltage to match battery voltage.
2. Select maximum IOUT current of solar cell less than battery capacity value.
Eg. Rechargeable battery = 360 mA / h
Solar maximum output current < 360 mA
