I am designing a new controller with touch keypad..Since its for an industrial application I would like to know the various failure modes associated with Capacitive touch keypads.

Here are just a few:

  • False positives
  • Water on the keypad causes poor response or false detection
  • Gloved hands do not work well (without special accommodation)
  • Buttons can become "stuck" and require re-calibration
  • Adjacent buttons can be activated when pressing a nearby button
  • Low sensitivity depending on cover materials
  • Won't work through metal
