Whoops, that has to be a bit more precise:

Airplane TAS? -> measuring pressure, temperature

Ship (Log) -> Pulses from log

Car (Tachometer) Pulses from tach-sensor

Bicycle -> one pulse per revolution

Flux of a liquid

Approach to an obstracle -> sonar or microwave echo

... and so on

Are you trying to measure -

1) Angular rotation speed/acceleration ?

2) Linear speed/acceleration ?

3) Target object you are trying to measure ?

4) Accuracy of measurement ?

5) Resolution of measurement ?

6) Object material under motion ?

7) Environmental conditions ?

Linear speed was on your list, Dana.

Next questions could be how to pick up the speed:

Rotattion encoder

shaft encoding / optical

Magnetic coil

or ...

In order to help you more of the questions need to be answered.

Are you trying to measure the speed of a butterfly or a Higgs Boson ?

And the other questions posed in earlier part of this, your thread.

Regards, Dana.

Still we are in a guess: what is the object you're going to measure its speed, what rpm do you expect and

is the measurement a fixed assembly or are you building a hand-held device that you want to show rpms picked up contact-less from any or from special surfaces. Are the rpms low enough to fix sometihn to the object (magnet / refection stripe?

"Slotted" optocoupler device and a optical sensor (which usually employs IR LED and photodiode as discrete devices) are same; the only difference is that the slotted optocoupler comes in a single package. To measure the speed, you need to record the frequency of the pulses coming from the optical sensor. You can refer application note AN2283 - PSoC® 1 Sensing - Measuring Frequency.

So far we know application is linear speed sensing, or RPM angular rotation speed.

So many questions unanswered, so little time...........

Slotted application, disk or tab attachment, balance, quadrature or not, speed limitations,

buss or current loop or......to consider.

Regards, Dana.
