Hi, the no-longer-supported HX3C reference design used PS8742b to add DisplayPort to the docking station. What's the current recommendation for adding DisplayPort alternate mode to a docking station based on HX3PD without interfering with what this controller offers? any new reference design or application notes available?

Thanks

Hi,

If you design in the HX3PD with display support in future, you will need Gen2 mux (10 gbps bitrate mux-demux) on the datapath, like this one - http://www.ti.com/lit/gpn/HD3SS460

PD3.0 will be functional anyway. It will be very similar to HX3C design on a system level.

Current HX3PD firmware cannot control external mux/demux.

Rajath

Hello,

The current HX3PD firmware release is for hub only operation.

A dock-based design is also being worked on, but it is not out yet. There are some customer dock designs based on HX3PD, if you would like to get more information about that, please contact Cypress Customer Support.

Can I get more details on your design? Do you require Gen 2 bitrate for your dock? How many ports are you planning?

Have you looked at the CCG4 Dock design?

Hi, thanks for your quick reply.

I don't require Gen2, but it would be nice to have, and I strongly prefer cypress over via-labs.

I need the upstream port to be able to charge the host while allowing fast data communications, same with one downstream C port and 4 A ports. And I need one DisplayPort supporting 4k, 2 USB 2.0 and 3 USB 3.1 on the dock itself. one of those USB 3.1 will be for your FX3 peripheral controller.

I'm really confused why the HX3C reference was removed without having an alternative. Do you know what was wrong with it? I do have an old copy. I find hard to believe it was pulled out because it's PD2.0 instead of PD3.0 considering you are suggesting CCG4M.

Hi,

HX3C is a fixed firmware part and a lot of requests and new designs that come in are requiring some kind of firmware customization. It not only lacks new features that are being asked by our customers, but also does not contain enough room to play around (memory, pins, etc).

We also do not have the bandwidth and resources to support HX3C, since we are concentrating on the more customizeable CCG4 dock and more elaborate and feature-filled HX3PD.

If the HX3C part can be used as it is (whatever functionality the chip is offering with factory firmware), good to go.

Otherwise, you can evaluate CCG4 Dock / HX3PD.

Thanks Rajath for your reply, I understand now. I love the simplicity of the designs around your HX3C/HX3PD so I prefer to avoid more specialised IC like on the CCG4 solution.

Considering you are already working on the firmware update for HX3PD to support alt mode, and I won't be prototyping until early next year anyway, what would you recommend me to use for the DisplayPort side of the design to preserve PD3.0, Gen2 speeds and all the other nice features of HX3PD?

Thanks

thank you Rajath, I'll go from there. any guesstimate when HX3PD will learn to control such external mux/demux?

Hi,

We do not have a schedule on future HX3PD updates. You can contact your local distributor/FAE for more support on customization.
