Hello,

I am looking for a sulution for az USB-C reference design with the following features:

- USB-C input (upstream port) with PD (power source, charging the connected laptop @60W)

- DP Alt Mode, 4k@60 Hz, HDMI 2.0 output (no dual DP/HDMI output required)

- USB3.0 HUB: switcheable modes (via external control, GPIO or I2C):

     - 2lane USB3.0 with 2lane DP (up to 2x5 = 10 Gbps)

     - 4lane DP, no USB3.0

- USB2.0

- Gigabit ethernet

- No USB-C downstream port required (Only USB-A @ USB2.0 and USB3.0)

I found that the HX3C Reference design ("RevStar", ) can be OK for the tasks above. Please let me know, how to switch during operation (not at compile time!) between 2lane and 4 lane DP modes. Please recommend other solutions if any. BOM and cost optimized solutions are welcome.

Thanks

Andras

Hi Andras,

1. Cypress do not have Eval Kits for whatever CCG3 charge through dongle (link: http://www.cypress.com/documentation/reference-designs/ez-pd-ccg3-usb-type-c-charge-through-dongle  )  or CCG4 dock (link: http://www.cypress.com/documentation/reference-designs/ez-pd-ccg4-usb-type-c-monitordock-solution ) . You can get schematic, PCB layout, and firmware from the link.

2. If you could like to have demo test, you could try to contact local Cypress FAE to see if there is any possible to get a demo.

3. For commercial docking stations, you could try to take a look Type-C dock from HP.

Best Regards,

Lisa

Hi Andras,

I could like to recommend you use CCG3 charge through dongle (link: http://www.cypress.com/documentation/reference-designs/ez-pd-ccg3-usb-type-c-charge-through-dongle  ) and remove CCG2 from the hardware, since CCG3 charge through dongle firmware have been released in SDK (LINK: http://www.cypress.com/documentation/software-and-drivers/ez-pd-software-development-kit?source=sear... ). And you can use the example firmware I have been attached in the Blog CCG3 DRP Porting from CTD US .

Hi, Lisa

Thank you for your reply. Is this reference design available as a Kit ? Can we try it on our own?

As I see, this design only support Pin Assigment D, so no 4-lane DP mode possible. No demultiplexer in it. It was supported in HX3C reference design. How can we combine the Charger capabilities of CCG3 design with the Pin Assigment C/D capabilities ?

Thanks

Andras

Hi Andras,

This reference design is not available as a kits, but we have shared schematic, PCB layout, and firmware on the website.

You can add a PS8742B between Type-C receptacle and DP to HDMI/CYUSB3302. With those hardware, the CYPD3123 can configured to pin assignment C/D capabilities.

Dear Lisa,

Thank you for the answer. We would like to have an experience with the Cypress USB-C chipset, like CCG3 with ParadeTech demux.

Do you have any recommendation how to start testing? For example Eval kits or commercial docking stations with Cypress chipset.

Thank you

Andras

Hi Lisa,

Thank you for the information. My question is: Which Eval Kit would you recommend to use if I want to test the DP Alt Mode in a dock application?

I mean , USB-C "input",  2-lane / 4-lane demultiplexing, DisplayPort (or HDMI) output. As I found, CCG1 Eval Kit is applicable (CCG1 Kit Client Board has the demux in there).

In final product, maybe, I would use CCG3 instead (higher integration: Billboard, FETs, ...), according to the reference design you suggested above. Do you have an Eval Kit for such purpose? (DP output demo). The  CCG3 Eval Kit Giude shows only a "DP input" demo, with USB-C "output". I would need the opposite one.

Thanks,

Andras

Hi Andras,

CCG1 client board is the only KITs have demo the feature you are looking for. But we do not recommend CCG1 for any new design.

Lisa
