I created a shield for testing a circuit that needs to run from at voltages well over 12-50 volts DC.  On the shield i designed I added a 5V regulator that could handle the large input voltage.  When I apply the external 5V to J1-Pin4 the Kit-042 doe not run properly.  Can anyone explain to me were i have gone wrong.  I have tried removing jumper on J9 but this did not work.  What am I missing and I would still powe rthe unit from J1-Pin4 as well as be able to program the unit using the USB connection.  Is this possible?

thanks

Scott

I'm afraid not.

Don't destroy your board, but connect 5V output of your regulator to the J1-Pin1.

Hi,

I think J1-4 is to output 5V.

How about applying 5V to VIN (J1-1)?

There is a diode on J1-P4 trace. I agree with Tanaka-san.

Thanks,

So, how about connecting your 5V to J1-1?

VIN is treated just like VBUS input, but via J1-1 (VIN).

Yes that is how I am doing it now to get around it. My question is how can I connect directly to 5V?

Dear Scott-san,

May be my English understanding is extremely poor, but from your question, I thought you were applying 5V to J1-Pin4.

But J1-Pin4 is supposed to be output from the board to the external devices and not input,

so if you want to provide 5V from outside the board,  you need to connect your 5V to J1-Pin1,

which is "NOT" what you were doing. (Am I correct?)

For the summay

(1) Do not connect your 5V to J1-Pin4

(2) Connect your 5V to J1-Pin1

So as i believe i understand it if i short across D11 and remove D13 i am good to go?

My attached circuits were excerpt from CY8CKIT-042 schematic.

According to the schematic VIN can accept 5 ~ 12V from external power supply.

But as you expected it requires an external power regulator if the power source is over 12V.
