you only need to typedef once.
I'll normally put it at the begining.
typedef uint8 BOOL;
from that on you just use BOOL anywhere such as
BOOL boolData = 1;

There is no equal sign (=) in a typedef.
The syntax follows a variable declaration
typedef KnownType Newtype;
