Hi,

great to see data for the PSoC 5 LP. The press release talks about single cell battery operation, the data sheet has a gap in regards to specs needed for single cell.

Advertising talks about very low voltage operation from 0.5V - 5.5V, sounds great. Unfortunately the data sheet talks about power numbers starting at 1.71V and up. Well, that is not a single cell any more. Ooops, there is not even any mentioning of the boost converter in the current data sheet.

There are no power numbers that include an operating mode with the boost converter on!? - did I miss it?

Based on this observvation I have to assume that the lowest possible operating voltage is 1.71 V, which is still very good but contradicts the press release.

What did I miss?

The family data sheet (e.g. the one for CY8C56LP - http://www.cypress.com/?rID=72827 ) has a section for the boost converter. Look at part 11.3.3 (page 67) - there a startup voltage of 0.5V is specified, with a load less than 7.5mA.

Additionally, the TRM for the PSoC5LP has a section on the boost converter (15.3.2).

The component data sheets for the boost converter have not been updated yet...

Hi hli,

thank you for the links, very helpful. Guess some external LC components are an acceptable price to pay for using just a single cell.

There ain't no such thing as a free lunch 🙂

And actually there aren't that many boost converters which can run from such a low voltage (basically 0.7 or 0.8V is the lowest, there are some from TI which can run from 0.3V - but even they need 0.7V startup voltage). So the PSoC5LP is a geat achievement in that it can start up from 0.5V even under load.

These parts will startup at .5V into full load. at room temp.

This approach startup of 20 mV.

If you do a web search you will find a number of possibilities, here is

one that starts up with 300 mV -

That's why I wrote 'there aren't so many' - I know that such boost converters exist. I even have used one 🙂
