Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can give advice.

I just bought the CY8CKIT-050A from mouser ( http://uk.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Cypress-Semiconductor/CY8CKIT-050A/?qs=%2fha2pyFadugyti4TX04RmxLR... ).

I believe this is the older version of the PSOC5 development kit.  Am I missing much by not using the new 5LP dev kit?  Is the documentation for the older board still available somewhere?

I've noted that cypress offer a board upgrade program.  Does anyone know if this is time limited?

Cheers.

Go here to see if your silicon qualifies for an upgrade -

Its not generally a time limited thing, but I would advise get the upgrade done

as soon as you can.

I applied for the -050 upgrade using online form last Thur, have not

heard back yet. They will do an upgrade later for PSOC 5 processor

module in 001 kit, stay tuned for that.

As of last tuesday, it was the latest version. Since then, the new PSoC5LP has been released, which has some upgraded capabilities:

  • faster SAR ADC
  •
  • support for CAN
  •
  • support for boost converter (operation from 0.5V)
  •
  • lower current consumption
  •
  • USB without external crystal
  •

For more details, look at the migration guide: http://www.cypress.com/?rID=72845

Whether you want to migrate over depends on what you need from the PSoC. But for a new design, it might be sensible to start with the newest component from the beginning (esp. since the 5LP seems like a bugfixed version of the PSoC5, since some the stuff was originally available there too).

The CD which comes with the kit contains all documentation for exactly this version, so you should be covered (it comes even with the schematics).

The replacement program should run for a rather long time - I think one can even now replace old PSoC3 kits, after two years or so. So there is no need to rush this...

 Hi there,

Thanks for the information - very useful.

I wasn't sure what information would be in the pack (It's due to arrive next week).  It'd good to know that all the documentation is supplied with the kit.

I'll probably hold fire for a little while on any upgrade plan, if there's no desperate urgency (I'm rather looking forward to trying out the board, so really don't want to return it right away)

Cheers..

You do not return the board. You get a promo code to get the new board

in the store, you pay for shipping only.

Oh wow.  That sounds like a rather generous offer.

I'll be checking it out sooner rather than later now.

Cheers.
