Question:

How does two-port delivery compliant hub controller (HX3C) save PCB size and reduce BOM cost?

Answer:

USB Type-C is the new USB-IF standard that solves several challenges faced by today’s Type-A and Type-B cables and connectors. USB Type-C uses a reversible slimmer connector to allow for increasing miniaturization of consumer and industrial products. The USB Type-C standard is gaining rapid support by enabling small form-factor, easy-to-use connectors and cables with the ability to transmit multiple protocols (DisplayPort, power and data), and offer power delivery up to 100W - a significant improvement over the 7.5W for previous standards.

Due to all the advanced features supported by USB Type-C and USB PD, Cypress foresees rapid adoption of USB PD in end customer products. In near future, there will be huge demand for USB PD compliant hubs to use in products such as docks, monitors, and dongles. HX3C provides the most optimized solution for designing a USB PD compliant hub.

A standard USB PD compliant hub requires a USB 3.1 Gen 1 compliant hub, one PD controller per USB Type-C port, and a Billboard class device to support DisplayPort along with external multiplexer for supporting flip connection.

HX3C is a single chip integrating a USB 3.1 Gen 1 compliant hub, a Billboard class device, two PD controllers required for implementing a USB PD compliant Type-C hub, which reduces the design cycle time and provides excellent savings on the board size and BOM cost.

Apart from the key components mentioned in the table, more BOM savings can be achieved with the reduction of passive components (Resistors, capacitors) when HX3C is used. Further, the PCB area of the Type-C/PD Hub design with discrete components can be reduced by 50% using HX3C.
