How are CCG3 devices used in a Thunderbolt Cable Applications?

Figure 1 shows the application diagram of a Thunderbolt cable using CCG3 devices. The CCG3 device is used in conjunction with the Clock Data Recovery chip (shown as “CDR” block in Figure 1 of this active cable design.

How does a CCG3 device work?

The CC and VCONN signals from the Type-C plug are connected to the CC1 and VCONN pins of the CCG3 device at both ends of the cable. The SSTX and SSRX signals are routed from one end of the plug to the other end via CDR devices. Each end of the cable has a CDR to retime and recondition the signals. While in Thunderbolt Alternate Mode, the LSTX and LSRX signals from the Thunderbolt node are connected to the SBU1 and SBU2 lines of the Type-C plug. The CCG3 device manages the flow of LSTX and LSRX traffic between the two port partners and the CDR devices. The DP and DM lines pass through the cable for transmitting/receiving USB2.0 data.
